Common Materials Used

1. Fiberglass: Fiberglass insulation is one of the most commonly used materials for wall insulation boards. It offers excellent thermal performance, is resistant to moisture, and is non-combustible. However, fiberglass can be irritating to the skin and respiratory system during installation.

2. Mineral Wool: Mineral wool, made from rock or slag fibers, is another popular choice. It provides good thermal and sound insulation, is resistant to fire, and has excellent moisture resistance. However, like fiberglass, it can also cause irritation during installation.

3. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS): EPS insulation boards are lightweight and offer good thermal resistance. They are resistant to moisture, easy to install, and have excellent compressive strength. However, EPS is not fire-resistant and can release toxic fumes when exposed to high temperatures.

4. Extruded Polystyrene (XPS): XPS insulation boards have similar properties to EPS but with improved moisture resistance and higher compressive strength. They are also more fire-resistant than EPS. However, XPS is not environmentally friendly as it is made from non-renewable fossil fuels.

5.Phenolic board:Phenolic insulation board actually consists of two flexible facing layers joint by plastic foam which presents the insulating core. The manufacturing process is based on the use of mixture of phenolic resin and high solids with a surface acting agent. Due to the heat that this reaction creates, bubbles in the material occur, produced by a liquid blowing agent, such as pentane, which is commonly used. In order of eliminating the risk of blowing agent being replaced by air over time, boards are often faced with glass tissue or  aluminum foil. The final result could be either sheet material cut into boards or blocks cut into previously determined shapes.

Comparing Material Performance

When comparing the performance of different insulation materials, factors such as thermal conductivity, R-value, moisture resistance, and fire safety should be considered. It is essential to evaluate the specific requirements of the building and choose a material that best meets those needs.

Environmental Impact

The environmental impact of insulation materials is a growing concern. Some materials, such as fiberglass and mineral wool, require substantial energy during production. However, they can be recycled at the end of their lifespan. On the other hand, materials like EPS and XPS are not biodegradable and contribute to landfill waste. Choosing eco-friendly alternatives, such as cellulose insulation or natural fibers, can help reduce the environmental impact.
